We may require information from your other healthcare professionals to help us with our examination. Do we have your permission to release this information to us?

We provide comprehensive eye care to our patients by way of education, service and compassion. Every effort is made by our staff and doctors to be up-to-date with the newest research and technology to best evaluate and maintain the health of your eyes. Our patients should know and feel that every member of the team is invested in their care.

State of the Art: To learn the most recent stage in the development of a product, incorporating the newest ideas and the most up-to-date features

What to expect at your eye exam:

  • Reception New patients will be asked to fill out a patient information form that includes pertinent information about you and your eyes that is held in absolute confidence at this office in accordance with the Privacy Act. This information will then be entered into our computer to secure an electronic file for you.

  • Pre-Test The technician will then take you into a pre-test room. Here you will undergo testing by a series of diagnostic instruments.

  • Fundus Photography A digital photograph or your retina will document your visual health permanently. This picture of your retina – the only place in the body where you can see the blood flowing without having to do any cutting – can show the presence of a disease before it’s visible elsewhere, such as M.S., hypertension, diabetes, and brain tumors.

  • OCT Ocular coherence tomography is an advanced medical imaging technique that uses light to capture micrometer-resolution, three-dimensional images from within the internal layers of the eye which determines any deep eye tissue disease.

  • Goldman Visual Fields Can detect dysfunction in central and peripheral vision which may be caused by various medical conditions such as glaucoma, stroke, pituitary disease, brain tumours or other neurological deficits.

  • Automated Refraction This instrument objectively gives us a guideline as to what your prescription is, it also takes a map of the outer part of your eye determining its shape which is important in contact lens fitting, refractive surgery, and various eye conditions that affect the cornea, like Keratoconus and dry eyes.

  • Corneal Mapping A non-invasive medical imaging technique for mapping the surface curvature of the cornea, the outer structure of the eye. Since the cornea is normally responsible for some 70% of the eye's refractive power, its topography is of critical importance in determining the quality of vision and corneal health. It also takes a map of the outer part of your eye determining its shape which is important in contact lens fitting, refractive surgery, and various eye conditions that affect the cornea, like Keratoconus, and dry eyes.

  • Colour Vision (Ishihara or Farnsworth) A test is a colour perception test for re-green colour deficiencies, the first in a class of successful colour vision tests called pseudo-isochromatic plates. About 10% of the male population have this genetic defect carried by the mother.

  • Intraocular Pressures Perkins/NCT (non-contact tonometry) a standard eye test that is done to determine the fluid pressure inside the eye.

  • Sterio Acuity Test Measures the smallest detectable depth difference that can be seen in binocular vision.

  • Lensometry Verifies the power in your current glasses.

After pre-testing you will then visit the doctor who will view and show you your digital eye information on the computer in the examination room.
Please make sure you ask your questions about your eye health, we are here to help you!

To Ensure Proper Eye Health Care for a Lifetime, We Recommend the Following:

  • Children The first checkup should be scheduled at 6 months of age and we recommend continuing with an annual examination until the age of 17. These exams are paid annually by the provincial government.

Please note:

80% of learning is through vision.
Every year thousands of children in schools suffer from poor self-concept unnecessarily.
60% of “problem learners” have undetected vision problems!

  • Adults 17 - 65 At least every 2 years, annually if a contact lens wearer, medical concern as a diabetic, or on certain pharmaceuticals that may affect vision.

  • Adults 65+ Annual to review for cataracts, macular degeneration and other eye health issues. The examinations are paid by the government in Alberta not Saskatchewan.

ANNUAL Eye–Health Examination for: Diabetics, hypertensive patients, contact lens wearers and those working on a computer more than 2 hours a day.

Emergency Eye Health Reviews: Please contact our office, after hours our email – these reviews are paid by the government (pink eye, foreign bodies, eye accidents, any eye emergency). Annual eye health exams in both Alberta and Saskatchewan are paid by the government for diabetics.

Spectacles are worn for different reasons. We pride ourselves in working with our patients to help them find the perfect pair of glasses meeting their needs, style and budget. It’s our privilege to assist our patients in all their eye care needs from health to fashion!

We offer our patients the current material in spectacle wear that will allow greater ease of safety in seeing together with the appropriate cosmetic appearance. Our well trained staff will advise patients on the different lens materials available. Today, eyeglass lens wearers should consider a proper lens coating, which can reduce glare, protect from both UV and harmful blue light, with anti-fog easy cleaning without smudging.

Eyeglass Prescriptions

Patients at Eye Health Centres will always be provided with a copy of their eyeglass prescription in Calgary or Regina, if requested. We hope you’ll want to buy your eyeglasses from our office. We believe we offer the best value available considering service, quality and price. If you decide to shop elsewhere for glasses, we certainly understand. Please advise us of your desires both in the Calgary and Regina offices.

Eyeglass Purchases Outside of Our Offices

Local opticians and optical shops generally do a good job of filling our prescriptions, but we have some concern with the use of eyeglass vendors over the internet. Fitting eyeglasses properly involves precise measurements, unbiased advice based on your needs and skillful adjustments of the frame and lenses. Since internet vendors do not actually meet with you in person they can’t provide those services. We provide all the optical services at no additional cost for patients who buy eyeglasses with us, but we can’t provide them for glasses purchased elsewhere.

To avoid confusion and disappointment with glasses purchased elsewhere, here is a list of services we provide and those we do not. Please check with the eyeglass vendor to determine return and refund policies in the event that problems occur.

We Provide Services for Eyeglasses Purchased Outside of Our Offices (a Fee may Apply)

  • Prescription verification – we will verify the basic lens parameters in new glasses to see if it matches your prescription.

  • We will also recheck the refraction test to confirm the prescription is correct if necessary. This will be done at no charge within 30 days of a new eyeglass prescription.

  • We will not troubleshoot optical measurements taken by others. Visual problems may result if a correct prescription is made with inaccurate optical measurements.

  • Correction or changes in the glasses will be up to you and the eyeglass vendor.

The following services or measurements are not available if you purchase glasses elsewhere. These measurements should be provided by the person selling the glasses.

  • Seg height

  • Vertical optical center

  • Eye size

  • Bridge size

  • Temple length

  • Frame model and colour

  • Lens material and index

  • Multifocal design and brand

  • Optional lens features, such as tints, coatings, etc.
